1. Fabiana Parano: Tell it Again! Storytelling Tools in the EFL Classroom

Stories are welcome in any foreign language learning situation and can be told to enhance any experience. Beyond specific purposes, stories are simply told for the sake of including their magic in the classroom, for the sake of sharing and enjoying the language through the storyline. Above all, they are incredibly powerful to create bonds and to connect with others. Storytelling is a folk art, a form of expression that belongs to all of us, as members of a community. So telling tales is something that reaches any human being.
In this workshop we will work on storytelling techniques and strategies to tell tales in EFL to any age group or level. We are going to explore the impact of non-verbal referents through the body language of the storyteller and the physicality of the characters.
We will work on ways to interact with audience and still, keep the essence of the story being told.
Narrative games will also be played.
Fabiana Parano is an English Teacher and a storyteller. She has majored in Storytelling at Estudio de Narración Oral Ana María Bovo and at Escuela de Narración Oral Ana Padovani. She has done intensive training as Clown, the Art of Mimicry (Mimo teatro Escobar-Lerchundi), Physical Theatre and the Use of Masks on Stage (Estudio Belisario, Marcelo Savignone). She teaches Storytelling in the Classroom at Instituto de Enseñanza Superior en Lenguas Vivas “Juan Ramón Fernández” and at Escuela de Maestros (ex CePA, Ministerio de Educación, C.A.B.A.). She has also taught Pensamiento Narrador 1 at Estudio de Narración Ana M. Bovo. Her experience includes telling tales to all kinds of audiences (children, adolescents and adults) as well as training teachers in the Art of Storytelling and its application in a foreign language situation. To this end, she has delivered workshops and presentations throughout the country and abroad.
Fabiana has written Stories in Motion, A Teacher’s Resource Booklet for the Beginning Storyteller and Stories to Build Emotional Literacy. She has created the following story-shows that combine storytelling and acrobatics, which she performs at schools, fairs and institutes: Stories, Twirls & Swirls, The Bullying Clown, Monkey’s Birthday Surprise and Superheroes.

2. Gustavo González: Opening the Door to the 21st Century Classroom

The 21st century classroom is a land worth exploring. Behind that closed door, different possibilities await: “The Promised Land”, “Never Ever Land”, “Fantasy Land” or “La La Land.” Let’s open that door to discover what our students need and become explorers of a world unveiling to us, providing us with digital technologies that can be great tools to include in our classes. We, teachers, can make the new millennium classroom paradise or hell. The choice is ours!

Gustavo González graduated as a teacher of English at I.S.F.D. N° 5 in Pergamino and holds a postgraduate degree from Universidad de Buenos Aires. He also holds a postgraduate diploma on Education and New Technologies from FLACSO (Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales) and has completed a course on Neurosciences for Educators at Asociación Educar. He has been in the ELT field since 1993, working as a teacher, school coordinator, teacher trainer and presenter. He has been delivering seminars and workshops all over Argentina, South and North America and South East Asia. He is one of the contributors to the book Imagination, Cognition & Language Acquisition: A Unified Approach to Theory and Practice, published by the New Jersey City University and has also written some articles for IATEFL (International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language) and other institutions. He is a teacher trainer for the Oxford Teachers’ Academy (OTA) and author of the “Blended Learning” session for the TET (Teaching English to Teenagers) Extension Course to the OTA.
